Senior Counsel, Music

Our international efforts have brought Netflix around the globe to virtually all countries and we’re excited to bring even more of our Originals programming to our viewers around the globe.Netflix seeks a seasoned production music attorney as Senior Counsel, Music to help support our expanding slate of Originals content and our domestic and international expansion strategy. The successful candidate will work in the company's Music Group, which is part of the Business & Legal Affairs Team based in Los Angeles. The Music Group is based in Los Angeles, London and Berlin and is responsible for all of Netflix’s global music business and strategy, from the production and licensing of Netflix Originals to the administration of Netflix’s repertoire of music and through to the distribution of the Netflix service globally. This exciting role focuses on the production side and will be responsible for structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements with the composers, songwriters, artists and performers who create music for Netflix's Original film, series and documentary content and with the record companies and music publishers who license music. He or she will handle music contract and copyright related matters as they arise, will likely need to dig into local law and practice in various International territories, and should be extremely comfortable working independently and counseling business partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impacts. He or she will have an innate ability to maintain organization and focus that fuels his/her effectiveness in successfully juggling multiple projects. You understand the dynamics among showrunners, executive producers, line producers, producers, finance, production, post production, credits, labor, marketing, publicity, content localization, business affairs and legal affairs and know when and how to engage and align the appropriate teams when a music issue calls. You’re comfortable evaluating risk and have the confidence to make quick decisions when faced with the exigencies of production.This is an opportunity to be part of a public company with a great consumer brand and to help Netflix shape the future of entertainment.This role is based in Netflix's Los Angeles office and reports to the Senior Counsel of the Music Group, part of the Business & Legal Affairs team at Netflix. REQUIREMENTSThe successful candidate will have:10+ years of film/series production music experience, including immersion in structuring, negotiating and drafting composer, performer and featured artist agreements, master use and synchronization license agreements, music producer agreements, record company and music publishing waivers and soundtrack album agreements; in-depth knowledge of music copyright and the film/series production process - from script to budget to music clearance/licensing to composer engagement/recording through to delivery, cue sheets, music publishing administration and launch; practical knowledge of the music and technology industries (including active relationships with music agents, managers, music publishers, record companies and music libraries); and understanding of the evolving theatrical, VOD, TV, syndication and home video landscapes. International market experience and international production experience is a plus. Experience providing in-house support in a film or television production company is highly preferred.

Coordinator, Original Content - Legal

Director, Production Counsel Training Program

The successful candidate will have seen it all and done it all across a variety of production contexts and, most importantly, will have the ability to help junior attorneys we have identified as the best and brightest rise to any occasion. Motivated by a desire to replicate her  own excellence in others, she will help shape the future of production legal through hands-on work at its most dynamic and progressive home.This individual will be charged with developing an in-house production legal training program to meet the growth of our rapidly expanding Content Legal team. The program will be designed to build a continuous pipeline of homegrown production lawyers for Netflix Studios’ series, feature, documentary, unscripted, kids and family programming. In addition to broad-based production legal experience, the ideal candidate will be a natural teacher and be able to work collaboratively with internal business partners to design and roll out the program.Sample curriculum will include but not be limited to: Entertainment law basics, to build a solid foundation of knowledge in content distribution models, windowing and exclusivity, the roles of industry players (agents, managers, studios, networks, etc.), feature and series financing, and relevant IP law (e.g., copyright, trademark, rights of publicity). The nuts and bolts of development, including book, article, or script options, pitch and spec sales, format deals, real people and “life story” rights, chain of title analysis, and the hiring of writers for bibles, treatments, scripts, etc. Production 101, including key players (creative, physical production, production finance, labor, music, credits, safety, risk management, etc.) and issue-spotting during prep and post; personal services agreements for actors, producers, directors, showrunners and key crew, various location and release agreements and related production agreements; and production oversight. The key aspects of how and why developing, producing, and releasing content for Netflix is different from more traditional studios.The RoleThe successful candidate will partner with both the Talent Development team and business leaders to design and implement a robust training curriculum, incorporating both classroom and on-the-job training. She will ensure that those who complete the training program will have a solid understanding of  development and production and are on a path to managing projects with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will work with the company's Original Film team to negotiate and draft agreements necessary to develop and produce the company's high-profile original feature films. The Original Film team is behind a range of exciting motion pictures including War Machine directed by David Michod and starring Brad Pitt, Okja directed by Bong Joon-Ho and starring Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Lily Collins, and the upcoming Bright, directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.   This is unique opportunity to be an important part of a growing Netflix initiative, and to help Netflix shape the future of film production and distribution, much the way it is doing for television.  REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years of development and production experience in feature films, with direct experience drafting all forms of agreements related to the development and the production of a motion picture.  Experience providing in-house support and/or firm experience required.
